Cosmetic Industry Alert: Dangerous Chemicals Still Widespread in Beauty Products

According to a report by CNN, the 2025 Beauty and Personal Care Content Report revealed that chemicals falling into the high-risk category are still prevalent in products such as shampoo, hair conditioner, foundation, and lipstick. Hidden dangers not listed on labels indicate that in the United States and Canada, 52% of the 231 cosmetic products tested contained PFAS chemicals, known to disrupt hormone balance and be linked to health issues including cancer. Furthermore, it was found that 88% of these products did not list these chemicals on their labels.

The Most Common Harmful Substances

The report also lists the most concerning chemicals that consumers should be aware of:

• Cyclopentasiloxane and Cyclomethicone: Silicon derivatives
• Methylparaben: Hormone disruptor
• BHT (Butylated hydroxytoluene): Endocrine disruptor and toxic to the environment
• D&C Red 27, 28: Color additives affecting the immune and reproductive systems

“Responsibility Lies with the Manufacturers, Not the Consumers”

Chemical safety expert Heather McKenney emphasized the need for transparency in the industry, stating that “Consumers should not have to figure out which products are safe. This responsibility lies with the manufacturers.”

Possible Safer Alternatives

The organization ChemFORWARD, which compiled the report, noted a 2% decrease in the presence of dangerous chemicals and an increase in safe formulations. However, it was still found that around 4% of the 50,000 products tested contained high-risk ingredients. Experts are calling for a transition to non-toxic formulations in the cosmetic industry, emphasizing that “Looking good should not come at the expense of our health.”
